Themes in Literature and Composition

Objectives 

This course is designed to increase students' fluency in formal written English.  Students are introduced to the process of reading and analyzing literature.  Special emphasis is placed on the development of skills necessary for good reading comprehension.  Students are engaged in the writing process.  They learn to gather information, organize ideas, and to find focus in their writing.  Instruction in grammar is integrated with the writing component.  Students learn basic sentence patterns, basic usage, punctuation, and spelling as part of the editing process.

Grading Policy

  • Tests/Essays/Projects (100 points each) - There will be several major grades each quarter.  Each test, essay, and project is worth 100 points.
  • Quizzes (5-20 points each) - Quizzes on reading assignments will be both announced and unannounced.  Vocabulary and grammar quizzes will always be announced, and will occur approximately every two weeks.
  • Homework (3 points each) - Homework will be assigned each evening, and collected and graded several times each quarter.

Class Participation - Students are expected to come to class on time and prepared.  This includes bringing all necessary materials to class as well as completing all reading and written assignments before the beginning of class.  Lateness will not be tolerated.


Please note that absence from school is not an excuse for late work.  It is the student's responsibility to find out what work he or she has missed

Assignments

Homework will be given each evening.  Homework will be collected and graded at random several times each quarter.  Quizzes will be given at random to ensure that reading assignments are completed.  All essays should be typed, double-spaced, and use 12 Pt. Times New Roman font.  Late assignments will not be accepted.  Test material will come from the readings, notes, and homework.
